Sept. 9: Doug Ingle of Iron Butterfly is 64 today.

Doug Ingle, born in Omaha, Nebraska, is a founding member and former organist, vocalist and primary composer for Iron Butterfly. He also performed with the group Stark Naked and the Car Thieves in the early 1970s after he left Iron Butterfly.

Doug became introduced to music at an early age by his father who was a church organist. His work is featured on Iron Butterfly albums Heavy, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Ball and Metamorphosis. He wrote the band's biggest hit, the epic seventeen-minute "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," which, un-slurred, means "In the Garden of Eden."

"Unconscious Power "

When he originally wrote the song, he had not intended it to run seventeen minutes long. The album and subsequent single release of the title track vaulted Ingle and the band to national prominence. "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" received the first Platinum Record sales award in the history of the Recording Industry and became a landmark record in psychedelic rock.

Ingle became physically and emotionally exhausted after several years of nonstop touring; he resigned from the group in 1971. While he has toured occasionally with his former band members since that time, he has not been involved with any of the group's later recordings.
