Born Perry Miller in Queens, New York City, Jesse Colin Young is a folksinger and songwriter. His career began in 1960s Greenwich Village and he released two solo albums before forming The Youngbloods.
The Youngbloods was an American folk rock band consisting of Jesse Colin Young, who sang and played bass, Jerry Corbitt on lead guitar, Lowell Levinger on rhythm guitar, and Joe Bauer on drums. Despite receiving critical acclaim, they never achieved widespread popularity. Their only U.S. Top 40 entry was "Get Together."
The Youngbloods signed with RCA and released "Grizzly Bear" (written by guitarist Jerry Corbitt), followed by their debut album, The Youngbloods in 1967. The album included "Get Together," which became a major hit a few years later when RCA re-released it after it was used in a public service announcement for the National Council of Christians and Jews.
Young also wrote a few hits from 1969 and into the '70s, including "Sunlight" and "Darkness, Darkness."
The group formed its own label, Raccoon Records, and continued releasing albums until Young disbanded the group in 1972 after his solo album, Together became a hit. Several more albums and some mainstream success followed, but Young had lost a major label contract by the 1980s.

He continued touring and re-formed the Youngbloods for a brief period before going back to his solo recording career again in 1987. He has since begun re-issuing older material.
When his recording studio and house were destroyed in the Ridgetop Fire in 1995, he moved from Marin to Hawaii.
