Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Bree's music is a mixture of rock, pop, and folk. She learned to play guitar by age fifteen. She moved to New York City when she was 17 to study theater at NYU. She eventually returned to music and, while still in college, began writing the songs that led to her 1998 record deal with Trauma Records.
“My songs let me do all of these scandalous and dirty things that I might not do in real life," she said in an interview a few years ago. "’d love to be that cheap and evil girl, with all the sex and danger that goes with it.”
In July 1999, Sharp released her first album, A Cheap and Evil Girl. It received excellent reviews. The album's first single, "David Duchovny," quickly garnered a following both for its musical qualities and its comical references to the actor.
There was an unofficial video of "David Duchovny" produced by Will Shivers and Charles Forsch, production assistants and producers from the set of "The X-Files," that featured a number of celebrities crooning the lyrics. The video was a hit on the internet and was circulated widely in the underground fan community.
Bree's second single was "America," an examination of contemporary American culture.
